VANCOUVER, Columbia Británica, 17 de marzo de 2011 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ -- Un mundialmente reconocido investigador del Síndrome de X frágil, que fuera el primero en identificar la largamente buscada anormalidad genética responsable por este desorden, será premiado por March of Dimes.

Stephen T. Warren, PhD, Profesor de la Cátedra William Patterson Timmie de Genética Humana y Director de la Cátedra Charles Howard Candler del Departamento de Genética Humana, así como Profesor de Bioquímica y Pediatría en la Escuela de Medicina de la Universidad de Emory, recibirá el Premio March of Dimes/Colonel Harland Sanders por su trayectoria profesional en el área de las ciencias genéticas. El Dr. Michael Katz, Vicepresidente Senior de Investigación y Programas Globales de March of Dimes, entregará el premio al Dr. Warren en el día de hoy, durante la Reunión Anual de Genética Clínica del Colegio Americano de Genética Médica que se celebra en el Centro de Convenciones de Vancouver.

El Síndrome de X frágil es una afección genética heredada que involucra cambios en el cromosoma X y específicamente en el gen FMR1. Es la causa principal de la discapacidad intelectual heredada. El X frágil puede ser transmitido en una familia cuyos individuos no muestren signos de esta afección genética. En 1991, el Dr. Warren – inicialmente financiado por una Beca Basil O'Connor Starter de March of Dimes – y algunos colegas publicaron su trabajo acerca de la anormalidad genética responsable del síndrome de X frágil, así como de la proteína afectada. El Dr. Warren ha aplicado exitosamente las conclusiones de su investigación a los ambientes clínicos.

El Dr. Warren recibió su doctorado en genética humana en 1981, por parte de la Universidad Estatal de Michigan, y en 1985 ingresó a la facultad de la Escuela de Medicina de la Universidad de Emory. En 1997 resultó elegido para el Consejo de Directores de la Sociedad Americana de Genética Humana y en 2006 fue elegido como presidente de dicha institución. Asimismo, entre 1999 y 2005 fue Editor Jefe del American Journal of Human Genetics.

El Dr. Warren ha recibido muchos honores por su investigación sobre el Síndrome de X frágil, incluyendo el Premio de la Facultad Albert E. Levy de la Universidad de Emory, un premio MERIT por parte de los Institutos Nacionales de Salud, el premio William Allan de la Sociedad Americana de Genética Humana, y fue electo para el Instituto de Medicina de la Academia Nacional de Ciencia. Asimismo, se le otorgó la primera edición del premio William Rosen a la Investigación, por parte de la Fundación Nacional X frágil.
